Book Review: Royal Savage by Victoria Ashley

My review:
Victoria Ashley as brought her A game with this amazing book. She has nothing back!

The story starts you off almost two years ago with an extremely tragic event and really sets to pace for the entire book. You then fast forward to today and meet Avalon, a beautiful strong woman and Royal a beautiful tattooed sexy tempting and powerful. This story is filled with pain, anguish, sexiness, tattoos, passion and love. Enjoy the ride while you feel for Royal and learn so much about him, yearn for a happy ending and sit on the edge of your seat as you turn the page. Lies, deceit, blood and anger. So many emotions are throughout this amazing story. Royal is guaranteed to have your heart!

"I’m a slave to darkness, Avalon, and all I feel is pain. Nothing more.”

"Life is a bitch . . . and she has me by the fucking throat."

“There’s a darkness inside your eyes that tells me you’re fighting demons, that you’re driven by the pain and not willing to give up until you feel the peace you’re seeking. It’s part of being human. Fighting is the only thing you can do. Pain is part of who we all are.”

"Before Olivia, all the girls ever wanted out of me were a good fuck and someone to rebel against their parents with. It was fun for a while, but always left me empty, until her..."

Blog Tour: Bury Me by Tara Sivec

BURY ME
by Tara Sivec

Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/20890425-bury-me?ac=1

Synopsis:

“All things truly wicked start from innocence.” – Ernest Hemingway

I hear screams in my head.

I see blood on my hands.
When I look in the mirror I see a stranger.

How is it that I can remember bits and pieces of my life, but nothing of any importance and nothing that makes any sense? Everything is twisted and nothing is right. I’m choking with every breath I take, suffocating on the unknown.

Two days ago, everything changed. Two days ago, the people I should trust the most became strangers in my convoluted head. The dreams I have can’t be real. The fleeting memories that whisper through my mind are scary and wrong…they have to be. If they aren’t, I have something much worse to fear than my fractured mind. I need to find out the truth, even if it destroys me.

I've been told my name is Ravenna Duskin. I’m eighteen years old and I live in a prison…

Excerpt:

Before I can command my feet to move toward the shape—the safer of the two evils—I hear another sound in the opposite direction and foolishly turn my head. Something heavy and solid crashes against my skull and I feel myself falling. Darkness descends over me one last time, covering my eyes, clogging my ears and stealing the breath from my lungs. Nothing will ever be the same again.
Nothing will ever be good again.

It will all be bad.

Bad

Bad

Bad.

Book Review: Pocketful of Sand by M. Leighton

Pocketful of Sand

A powerful novel of abuse and loss as a mother runs away from a childhood of sexual abuse that resulted in the birth of a daughter, fathered by her step-father. The unusual part is that her running is financed and arranged by her mother, who has been  willing to permit the abuse as long as it kept her man with her and happy, but when he started on the granddaughter when she was only four, even tis woman drew the line, and gave her daughter money and helped her escape with her daughter. I did child protective services for 16 years and can tell you from personal experience that many women make better grandmothers than mothers. I have no way to explain this but I have seen it so that made this story believable to me.

Eden and her daughter, Emmy, go as far as they can go, across the country, and rent a beach front cottage in a tiny town where they feel they will never be found. Their landlord, Cole,  is a man who lost his own daughter when she was Emmy's age. She was a passenger in his car and he was driving under the influence when they wrecked and she was killed. The town people think he is crazy because he spends so much time alone, makes a sandcastle on the beach every Sunday regardless of the weather and can be heard talking to his dead daughter. He has never forgiven himself and neither has his wife, so he too is hiding away in this tiny town where he has bought several houses to remodel and rent and does almost all the work himself.

When he sees Emmy, something in him is deeply touched. She is not only the same age, but strongly resembles his deceased daughter and she is immediately drawn to him. In spite of his best efforts to remain alone, Emmy keeps finding ways to talk to him and as their landlord, he is forced to spend time with them. Eden has never lived in a cold climate so he has to help her prepare for a cold Maine winter and these two broken people begin to have feelings for each other. Gradually a relationship develops that neither understands or knows where it will lead.

Just as they are beginning to build trust and find love, Cole's wife comes looking for him, wanting him back, and Eden's stepfather shows up, also wanting her and Emmy back.  Suspense and romance mixed with emotional backgrounds that have broken our characters almost beyond the healing point but making them understand the brokenness they find in each other. The storyline is fascinating and thought provoking. Five stars and a strong recommendation to readers who love this type story as well as those who have never read this type story before. I think you will be very glad you read it and will close the last page with a much better understanding of how and why people stay in abusive relationships and how hard it is to  leave when all your self-esteem and courage are wiped out by the abuser. Also, the story of a man who needs to learn to forgive himself for a bad mistake and hopefully reading this will prevent someone else from making this same bad decision.

“She’s beauty for my ashes. And I’m hope for her heartache.”—Cole Danzer.

I don’t know what makes a great love story. Is it that instant attraction when boy meets girl? The passionate kisses and the fairy-tale ending? Or is it a lifetime of tragedy, paid in advance, for a few stolen moments of pure bliss? The pain and the suffering that, in the end, you can say are worth it for having found the missing piece of your soul?

The answer is: I don’t know. I don’t know what makes a great love story. I only know what makes my love story. I only know that finding Cole when I did, when Emmy and I were running from a nightmare, was the only thing that saved me. That saved us. He was more broken than I was, but somehow we took each other’s shattered pieces and made a whole. If thatis what makes a great love story, if that is what makes an epic romance, then mine…ours is the greatest of them all.

I was born and raised in the United States, and I’ve lived in several of the fabulous fifty. Though I currently live in the deep South, I spent much of my childhood up North and hope to return there one day. A few other things about me: I believe that sometimes you have to look really, REALLY hard to find the good in people, but it's there. I believe that I'm shrinking (I swear five years ago I was two inches taller). I believe my husband is quite possibly one of the most amazing men in the entire world (I can't be sure because I haven't met all of them). I believe coffee and chocolate, when combined, could be the basis for world peace. I believe that Jesus rocks and communism doesn’t. I believe that white makes me look fat and black collects lint. I believe summer's too hot, winter's too cold and fall was made for football. I like dogs better than cats and the first movie in a trilogy is invariably the best. But most of all, I believe that love conquers all.

Book Reveiw: 500 Days by Jessica Miller

This book catches your attention from the title alone and keeps us hanging for several chapters before we learn the meaning of this intriguing title and what it has to do with our characters. This is a fairly long novel with a large cast of characters but most of them are related to, or in some way connected to, our two leading characters. These are Casper and Alexis, or Alex as she prefers to be called.

Casper is a rich kid, son of divorced parents with a dad that continues to gift him with new and younger step-moms and half siblings. We see and hear very little from his mother but the on-going hostility between him and his dad keep the dad as a principal character in our storyline. Casper is a disappointment to his dad because he wanted Casper to follow in his footsteps as an outstanding attorney, and maybe even a prosecutor like his dad. After three years of college Casper changed his major from pre-law to undecided. He loves music, writing it, playing it and singing it, and has his ownboy band that is very popular at the local club scene. His two best friends are his band mates and though he has a room in his fraternity house, he actually lives in a rented house with these two friends, Colton and Greyson. Everyone who hangs out at the clubs know these guys, especially Casper. He is devastatingly handsome and loves to get drunk and have sex—that is his reputation—and seldom with the same girl twice. He never takes them home with him. He either goes to their place or takes them to the frat house and either way they are gone by morning. He dresses and leaves their place after theygo to sleep and at the frat house he either passes them off to another guy or calls a cab to take them home. When morning comes he does not want to even see who he was with the night before. But something changed last New Year’s Eve at a party he attended. He hooked up with a girl whose name or address he does not know. All he knows is that it was the best night of sex he ever had and he cannot stop thinking about it or dreaming about it and the beautiful green eyes and ivy tattoo she had around her body. He called it poison ivy and that was what she was to him because since her no girl has been able to satisfy him.

Alex background has some similarity with Casper’s—he most notable being absent parents. The question we are left wondering for much of the book is why her oldest brother, who was only 18 at the time, had to assume custody and responsibility for raising her and her other 3 brothers. Two brothers are older than Alex, one is her twin and the youngest is graduating high school so the oldest, with his parental duty done, has joined the Marines and is being sent to Iraq. She and her brothers are very close and into their mix we find her brothers’ best friend. Colby, who was supposed to be like another brother
to her but took her virginity and gave her the ivy tattoo her clothing conceals most of the time. If her brothers knew the truth about Colby there would be hell to pay. Probably the other most important person in Alex life is her cousin Declan, who has also been her best friend for their entire life and they currently attend the same college as Casper, work as bartenders at one of the clubs where his band frequently plays and the two girls share an apartment and expenses. They are not wealthy and really need the jobs as the pay is good and the tips are better. The bar owner and the bouncers are protective of the girls and Alex has proven several times that the martial arts she was taught by her brothers
makes her pretty well able to take care of herself in most circumstances. But, she still does not wanther brothers to know where she works as they are very protective of each other and she knows they would not approve. The bartenders and waitresses at this bar wear costumes and lots of heavy make-up so she has never been recognized. One thing she has in common with Casper but neither know about is she also had an incredible New Year’s Eve hook up with a guy but was so drunk she doesn’t even know his name. She remembers his smell, his taste and the amazing sex that she still dreams about and has
left her feeling every man she has been with since are all a bunch of losers who cannot compare to her dream lover.

This author tells us the story from the perspective of these two main characters—Alex and Casper, usually alternating chapters. A few authors use this technique and it works very well for me as the reader because we know what is going on inside the heads of both characters rather than one as is usual. It helps us follow the storyline much better and it also gets us more involved in the storyline as we want to tell these bozos what to do and not do. We become not just the reader, but a part of the story. But a part that no one listens to so we keep turning the page to see when they are going to wise up and
listen to us. This is a very effective writing technique.

Alex troubled past has left her with her own set of problems and issues she needs to deal with but instead she tries to hide from them. She is extremely aggressive and unfriendly with most people, especially men. She has no respect for Casper as she has watched him get drunk and leave the bar too many times with too many whores. He likes Declan a lot in a sisterly kind of way and never tries to come on to her or to Alex as he has seen her almost castrate or knock out men who crossed the line into her personal space. The costumes and make-up hide everything but their eyes and lips and once Casper gets
a good look at Alex eyes and lips, he feels a spark he cannot identify but it will not leave him alone.

Declan and Colton, Casper’s best friend and bandmate, start to really like each other but shyness or something keeps them from hooking up. Alex is encouraging Declan and Casper is encouraging Colton and finally the two agree to go on a date but only a double. Casper and Alex both hate blind dates but both agree just to help out their friend, never dreaming they would be a couple on this date. It is a night filled with slings and arrows going right and left. They appear to hate each other and yet when they touch, each feels the electricity. As readers we know this is love but they can’t or won’t see it and their
love/hate relationship continues for much of the book. They are repeatedly thrown together because of the budding relationship between Declan and Colton so they agree to a truce. One night they get really drunk and end up having sex—great sex—but both continue to deny any emotional feelings for each other and yet have other nights of earth shattering sex. And there is the tattoo—or did he imagine it because he was drunk ?

As the storyline progresses we learn more about each family, learn what happened to both sets of parents, watch the characters face family dramas, deal with death, at least two major plots and several minor plots. When we finally learn the meaning of the 500 days the storyline begins to come together for us and then we see how the two families had a past connection we never suspected in the first part of the book. It is a lengthy book but worth every minute it takes to read it.

If you enjoy reading a really good book that will literally keep you up all night trying to finish it to see how their story ends, then this is the book for you. It has sex, romance, death, dysfunctional families, happy family times, college life, party life, almost everything a book could contain. And it is so well written that you feel a part of the story, you feel their pain, you rejoice in their happiness, you worry over their problems and you can’t sleep for wondering what was on that next page when you turned out the light.

Casper Covington had his music, women, and pretty much anything he wanted at his disposal. But the one thing that plagued his thoughts constantly was the one thing he couldn't have. The girl he met six months ago. A drunken one night stand that he couldn't get out of his head. The only thing he remembered from that night was her green eyes and the ivy tattoo that stretched the length of her body. In his attempts to put an end to the tortuous dreams of the mysterious girl, Casper’s attention is caught by the new bartender. There’s just something so familiar about her that his need to get to know her becomes more troublesome than he expected.

Alexis Radcliff was raised by her four brothers making her as tough as nails on the outside but on the inside she wanted what every girl did – someone to love her, faults and all. She would be damned if she admitted that out loud and made a point to show she could use men just as easily as they used women. But when a sexy musician starts to show interest in Alex she has a hard time convincing herself to stay away. Alex knows everyone has secrets but hers are ones she doesn't want to share. But when she can no longer fight her feelings, her dark past slowly starts to unravel.

Can true love conquer all? Or are past ghosts a haunting premonition of what lies ahead?

I live in a fantasy world and have an over active imagination. But the best part about that is I never stop creating new characters and new stories to share. I love writing and expressing myself in a way that everyone else can enjoy as well. I work in the salon most days, but when i'm not doing hair, I'm writing or reading.

Review: Anew: Awakened (Book 1) by Josie Litton

Anew: Book One: Awakened

Coming Soon - January 12, 2015

In this erotic retelling of “Sleeping Beauty” set in the near future, a beautiful young woman awakens in the garden of a secluded palazzo with no knowledge of who she is or how she came to be there. For the man who walks out of the darkness to claim her, she is at once the ultimate challenge and the greatest temptation.

Haunted by terrifying memories of another existence, Amelia is caught between passionate desire for Ian and longing to discover her true self. Even as he is determined to possess her body and soul, Ian’s need to protect Amelia leads him into a confrontation with his tormented past.

Together, they face the challenges that lie beyond the sanctuary of the palazzo in the glittering world city on the edge of cataclysmic change. In the midst of sensual excess that conceals seething rebellion, Amelia and Ian will discover that love has become the ultimate threat to survival.

This is a futuristic novel, and a very good one as it pertains to a hot topic even today--human cloning.  A very wealthy couple has a daughter named Susannah who has  a terminal illness. In an attempt to keep her alive, they have her cloned in order to harvest organs from her clone to save her. This clone was kept in a liquid artificial womb and stem cells or whatever was taken from her as needed over the years as she grew. Supposedly she was not conscious of any of this and would be an identical replica of Susannah in every way.

Susannah did grow up and she fell in love with a man named Ian, also a very wealthy man who was in the arms business in a very different world from the one we live in today. A caste system was in place and it was very strictly enforced and very difficult for anyone to go from a lower, working class grouping, into an upper caste. Cities and homes had armed guards to prevent intrusion from one class into the other with the exception of the "workers", who provided labor for the wealthy but never crossed them in any way and had to sign a secrecy pact never to divulge any information they may be privy to in their occupations. Cloning was very controversial, and illegal in some places, and their were militant groups whose focus was to destroy any clones they could find and any institution where cloning occurred.

Another off shoot of human cloning was "brain mapping", in which the brain patterns of the human were transmitted to the clones, supposedly making the brain function identical to the original as much as the physical body was, and the result was a clone known as a "replica".  Susannah had arranged to have this done with her clone and then a year later Susannah had died, leaving ownership of her "replica clone" to Ian.

The story begins as the replica, named Amelia after Susannah's imaginary childhood friend, is awakening at Ian's summer home. She has total amnesia at first and Ian must tell her about her past. She is very similar to Susannah but not identical as Susannah had some injuries as a child that changed the contours of her face. Her clone did not experience that, so the face is different. Amelia is very deeply attracted to Ian but her personality begins to evolve and she is very different from Susannah. She likes different foods, different music and where Susannah was very meek and submissive, Amelia is very opinionated and outspoken.

Ian and Amelia fall deeply in love and their sex life is hot and frequent. But they are both unsure if their love is actual love for each other or a direct result of the brain mapping that Susannah had done. Ian decides to give Amelia a chance to find out and notifies Susannah's brother and grandmother, who are her only surviving family, about the existence of the "clone" AKA Amelia. Susannah's brother immediately comes to claim her and take her home. Amelia thinks Ian wants rid of her so she willing goes with him and tries to establish a life as "cousin Amelia". She quickly learns that life in the real world is totally different from the life she has been living in Ian's compound since her awakening. There is extreme prejudice against clones and replicas and she must keep her real identity a secret or her life will be in danger.

The story evolves around Amelia's attempt to fit into a word that is totally new to her. Her only memories are occasional flashbacks to the time she spent in the artificial womb and the pain of the extractions over the years as Susannah needed stem cells from her body in order to survive. She does have an out standing intelligence and absorbs all the knowledge he can from internet and other sources, but the emotions are totally new to her and something she has to learn to deal with totally on her own. There are individuals and groups out to identify and kill all clones and replicas so she is always at risk. There are suitors who find her beautiful and are attracted to her as possible mates. There is always Ian in her thoughts and in her life and she cannot decide if he loves her or Susannah and she is only a substitute.

This is a very well written futuristic love story with drama and suspense to keep us interested from beginning to the end, which leaves us hoping for a sequel. Five stars for a very enjoyable read.
